Binarizing by Classification: Is Soft Function Really Necessary?

چکیده

Binary neural networks leverage $\mathrm{Sign}$ function to binarize weights and activations, which require gradient estimators overcome its non-differentiability will inevitably bring errors during backpropagation. Although many hand-designed soft functions have been proposed as better approximate gradients, their mechanism is not clear there are still huge performance gaps between binary models full-precision counterparts. To address these issues reduce error, we propose tackle network binarization a classification problem use multi-layer perceptron (MLP) the classifier in forward pass estimator backward pass. Benefiting from MLP's theoretical capability fit any continuous function, it can be adaptively learned backpropagate gradients without prior knowledge of functions. From this perspective, further empirically justify that even simple linear outperform previous complex Extensive experiments demonstrate method yields surprising both image human pose estimation tasks. Specifically, achieve $65.7\%$ top-1 accuracy ResNet-34 on ImageNet dataset, with an absolute improvement $2.6\%$. Moreover, take lightweighting approach for well-designed SBPN BHRNet. When evaluating challenging Microsoft COCO keypoint enables mAP up $60.6$ first time. Experiments conducted real platforms BNN achieves balance computational complexity, especially when resources extremely low.

Is pediatric labeling really necessary?

Labeling refers to the label on the drug container and all printed materials, including the package insert, that accompanies the product. Labeling of a drug indicates that there is substantial evidence from adequate and well controlled clinical trials for the safe and effective use of that drug. Labeling provides important information on clinical pharmacology, indications and usage, contraindic...

Is your brain really necessary?

"Professor John Lorber has a facility for making doctors sit up and think about hallowed concepts," writes Adrian Bower, a neuroanatomist at Sheffield University, England, where Lorber holds a research chair in pediatrics. "The human brain is the current object of his challenging speculation," continues Bower, referring to his colleague's recent propositions concerning hydrocephalus, or water o...

Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy: is a knife really necessary?

BACKGROUND Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy (LP) is currently accepted as a suitable treatment modality for infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS). In this report, we describe some technical modifications of LP using a 3- or 5-mm hook with electrocautery as a substitute for a knife for incising the pylorus. The outcomes of LP using a standard retractable pyloromyotomy knife are compared with ...

Is Compare-and-Swap Really Necessary?

The consensus number of a synchronization primitive, such as compare-and-swap or fetch-and-add, is the maximum number of processes n among which binary consensus can be solved by using read-write registers and registers supporting the synchronization primitive. As per Herlihy’s seminal result, any synchronization primitive with consensus number n can be used to construct a wait-free and lineari...

C-arm Calibration - Is it Really Necessary?

C-arm fluoroscopy is modelled as a perspective projection, the parameters of which are estimated through a calibration procedure. It has been universally accepted that precise intra-procedural calibration is a prerequisite for accurate quantitative C-arm fluoroscopy guidance. Calibration, however, significantly adds to system complexity, which is a major impediment to clinical practice. We chal...
